Historical Pictures Native Americans 01 Gallery
Among the many pictures in my Historical Pictures Collection are many of Native Americans. These are from the Upper Great Lakes region with emphasis on Lake Superior Ojibwa. Though I’ve acquired images from other areas, it seems the largest percentage are from the Superior basin. These images come from postcards, stereoviews, cabinet cards, press photos and lithograph prints. Where I can, they’ve been identified. Most remain a mystery.

- Mother Ontonagon – Cabinet Card. On the rear of this picture was written Mother Ontonagon 120 yrs. The picture was taken in the 1880s. Her name was Go-Da-Quay and was born around 1781 near La Pointe, Wisconsin. She married a trapper and became known as Charlotte Godfrey.
- This is a picture from Nahma. Taken in the 1920s, The family is unknown but the photo is recent enough that they might be known.
- This a gathering in Ashland, Wisconsin to make peace between the Chippewa and the Sioux. The mediator is Buffalo Bill Cody. I expect this was done at his Wild West Show and may have been a publicity stunt. Pictured are many of the chiefs from both the Ojibwa and the Sioux.
- This unknown Ojibwa princess dresses in beautiful traditional clothing.
- I found this old stereoview that was labeled Lake Superior Chippewa. This was taken around 1880 and the people in the picture are unidentified.
- From Menominee, this postcard shows a couple of native American children in front of a bark teepee. As usual, they are unidentified.
- This is an Ojibwa family from Sault Ste. Marie. They are unidentified.
- This is the well known “Rapids Pilot” who would take people shooting through the rapids of the St. Mary’s River. His name was John Boucher
- A group of native Americans from Menominee build a canoe from the traditional way. This is how traditions are passed on.
- Another old picture identified as Chippewa Chief. He is unidentified. This is taken from a stereoview from the 1880s.
